Christian Krause

Lutheran bishop of Brunswick; president of the Lutheran World Federation, 1997–20031940 – 2024

German Lutheran bishop. As president of the Lutheran World Federation he signed the confirmation of the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification at Augsburg on 31 October 1999.

Christian Krause was born on 6 January 1940 at Dallgow-Döberitz in Brandenburg and was ordained a pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hanover in 1969 (Lutheran World Federation, notice on the death of Christian Krause (29 November 2024)). He was bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brunswick from 1994 to 2002, and president of the Lutheran World Federation from its assembly at Hong Kong in 1997 until its assembly at Winnipeg in 2003 (Lutheran World Federation, notice on the death of Christian Krause (29 November 2024)).

His is the first of the federation’s signatures on the statement that confirmed the Joint Declaration (Official Common Statement (1999) signatures); see Lutherans and Catholics Agree on Justification. He died at Wolfenbüttel on 28 November 2024 (Lutheran World Federation, notice on the death of Christian Krause (29 November 2024)).

    At Augsburg the Lutheran World Federation and the Catholic Church confirm a joint declaration: they share a consensus in basic truths of the doctrine of justification, and the condemnations of the sixteenth century do not apply to the teaching it sets out. Differences remain.
