Marutha of Maypherkat

Bishop of Maypherkat, envoy to the Persian courtAlso: Maruthas, Marutha of Martyropolis

Bishop from the Roman frontier with Persia who went as an imperial envoy to King Yazdegerd I. He brought the canons of Nicaea to the Persian bishops and with Isaac of Seleucia led the synod of 410.

The Synodicon calls Marutha bishop of Maypherkat and says that he came down on an embassy to the Persians in the time of King Yazdegerd I (Synodicon Orientale p. 253). Socrates, who calls him a bishop of Mesopotamia, says that the Roman emperor sent him to the Persian court more than once, that he cured the king of an illness and exposed the tricks of the magi, and that the king allowed him to build churches (Socrates, Church History 7.8). Socrates also mentions him at Chalcedon among the bishops assembling for the synod that deposed John Chrysostom (Socrates, Church History 6.15).

The acts of 410 describe him as the mediator of peace between East and West. He carried a letter from the bishops of Syria and Mesopotamia, showed it to Isaac of Seleucia, and with him had it read to the king (Synodicon Orientale pp. 255–256). At the synod Isaac called on him to produce the book of the canons of Nicaea, and it was Marutha who proposed that all should sign them (Synodicon Orientale pp. 259–260). The synod also adopted the order of worship that he and Isaac had shown the bishops (Synodicon Orientale canon 13, p. 266). See the Church of the East Organises at Seleucia-Ctesiphon.
