Shalmaneser V

King of Assyria, 727–722 BCdied 722/721 BC

King of Assyria for five years. Kings says he made Hoshea of Israel his vassal and besieged Samaria; the Babylonian chronicle records one act of his reign, that he ravaged the city.

Shalmaneser took the throne of Assyria and Babylon on the twenty-fifth of the month Tebetu, after the death of Tiglath-pileser, and died in the same month in his fifth year. The Babylonian chronicle records one act of his reign: he ravaged Samaria (Babylonian Chronicle 1 i.24–30). Kings says that he made Hoshea of Israel his vassal and that Assyria imprisoned Hoshea when he rebelled and laid siege to Samaria (2 Kings 17:3–5) (2 Kings 18:9). His successor Sargon II claimed the capture of the city as his own. See the Fall of Samaria.
