Estate in the county of Mâcon in Burgundy given by Duke William for a monastery under the Rule of Benedict, free of every lord and placed under the protection of the pope.

In the foundation charter Cluny is an estate with a manor, a church dedicated to St Mary and St Peter, dependants, vineyards, woods and mills, lying in the county of Mâcon. Duke William I of Aquitaine gave it to the apostles Peter and Paul so that a monastery might be built there (Foundation Charter of Cluny). See the Founding of Cluny.
