Low Hampton
A hamlet in the town of Hampton, New York, close to the Vermont border. William Miller lived here from the end of the war with Britain and dated his Apology and Defence from his home here.
William Miller writes that at the close of the war in which he had served he moved to “my present residence in Low Hampton, N. Y.”, and that it was there, with leisure for reading, that he came to believe the Bible and to study its prophecies (Miller, Apology and Defence, p. 4). His first public lecture, he says, was given at Dresden, about sixteen miles from his residence (Miller, Apology and Defence, p. 18). See the Millerites and the Great Disappointment.
What happened here
- 22 October 1844, firm dateThe Millerites and the Great Disappointment
William Miller reckons from the book of Daniel that Christ will return about 1843, and by his own estimate some fifty thousand people come to expect it. On 22 October 1844 the last date set passes. Seventh-day Adventists, who give the date another meaning, organize in 1863.
