Paphos

Paphos, CyprusLevant and ArabiaAlso: Nea Paphos, New Paphos

Harbour city at the south-western end of Cyprus, where Acts places the island’s Roman proconsul. Here, according to Acts, the proconsul Sergius Paulus heard Barnabas and Paul on their first missionary journey.

Acts places the Roman proconsul of Cyprus at Paphos. It says that Barnabas and Saul crossed the whole island from Salamis to reach it, and that the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, sent for them there. It tells how Saul rebuked the magician Elymas, who was struck blind for a time, and how the proconsul believed. From this point Acts calls Saul Paul. The party sailed from Paphos to Perga on the coast of Asia Minor (Acts 13:6–13). See Paul’s First Missionary Journey.
