Capital of El Salvador and seat of its Catholic archbishop. Archbishop Óscar Romero preached there from 1977 and was shot dead in the chapel of the Divina Providencia hospital on 24 March 1980.

San Salvador is the capital of El Salvador in Central America. The United Nations truth commission records that on 24 March 1980 its archbishop, Óscar Romero, was assassinated while celebrating Mass in the chapel of the Hospital de la Divina Providencia in the city (UN Truth Commission for El Salvador, From Madness to Hope (S/25500), p. 127).     The Assassination of Óscar Romero

    On 24 March 1980 the archbishop of San Salvador is shot dead while celebrating Mass, the day after he had called on soldiers to stop the repression. A UN truth commission later finds that former Major Roberto D’Aubuisson gave the order.
