Sergiyev Posad
Town north-east of Moscow that grew up round the monastery of the Holy Trinity founded by Sergius of Radonezh in the fourteenth century, now the Trinity-Sergius Lavra.
The Life of Sergius of Radonezh describes the place as it was when he and his brother came to it: deep forest with a spring, no road, no village or house nearby (Life of Sergius of Radonezh ch. 5). By the time the Life was written it could speak of the house as a great monastery, the lavra in Radonezh (Life of Sergius of Radonezh ch. 7). The modern town bears his name. See Sergius of Radonezh and the Trinity Monastery.
