Ad sanctam beati Petri sedem
The constitution of 16 October 1656 in which Pope Alexander VII defined that the five propositions condemned in 1653 were taken from Jansen’s Augustinus and were condemned in the sense Jansen intended.
The clause printed in the handbook reads, in substance: we declare and define that those five propositions were excerpted from the book of Cornelius Jansen, bishop of Ypres, entitled Augustinus, and were condemned in the sense intended by the same Cornelius. It answers the position that the propositions were rightly condemned but were not Jansen’s.
Directly after it the handbook prints the formula that Alexander VII ordered to be signed, from the constitution Regiminis apostolici, which it dates 15 February 1664. The signer submits to the constitutions of 1653 and 1656 and swears that he rejects and condemns the five propositions “excerpted from the book of Cornelius Jansen called Augustinus, and in the sense intended by the same author”. See Jansenism and the Bull Unigenitus.
