The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle
Annals of English history kept in Old English at several monasteries from the late ninth century. The Peterborough continuation runs to 1154 and is a contemporary record of the reigns of William II and Henry I.
The Chronicle is a set of related annals, begun in the time of King Alfred and continued independently at different houses. For the years around 1100 the text translated here is the continuation kept at Peterborough, which does not hide its opinion of kings: the annal for 1093 complains that William II took back what he had promised when he thought himself dying.
Its entries are brief and dated by year. It is cited here for the public events of the career of Anselm of Canterbury: his appointment to Canterbury in 1093, his departures and returns, and his death in 1109.
