Annals of Pressburg

manuscript of the early thirteenth century

A short set of Hungarian annals running from 997 to 1203, preserved in a manuscript that once belonged to the church of St Martin at Pressburg (Bratislava). It dates the crowning of King Stephen to 1000 and his death to 1038.

The editor’s preface says that the manuscript was written at the beginning of the thirteenth century, and that slips of the pen and year numbers that often disagree with the true dates show it to be a copy of older annals now lost.

Its entries are a line each. For the time of Stephen I of Hungary they give the martyrdom of Adalbert under 997, the death of Géza, prince of the Hungarians, under 998, the crowning of Stephen under 1000, the death of the king’s son Henry under 1031 and the king’s own death under 1038. The editor notes that the older Life of Stephen puts Géza’s death in 997 and the coronation in 1001.
