The dedication is addressed to the burgomasters and magistrates of Leiden by the children of Arminius, who sign themselves the sons of “James Arminius, a native of Oudewater”, writing also for their two sisters. They say that their father, who had lately died, had been called to the university eight years before from the church of Amsterdam, where he had been pastor for fifteen years, to take the chair left vacant by Franciscus Junius.

The editor of the edition of 1853 says that the theses were discussed at various times from 1603 to 1609. The dedication is cited in the entry for Jacobus Arminius for the facts of his life as his family stated them.
