Robert Ashe worked in Buganda beside Alexander Mackay. He knew several of those who were killed, among them the boy Lugalama, and he prints Bishop Hannington’s last diary, which reached the missionaries some months after the bishop’s death.

He was in the country when these things happened, and for the executions he relies on what others told him. He often says from whom he heard an account, and he marks some of it as report at second hand. His sympathies are those of an English Protestant missionary; he calls the Catholic converts the pupils of the French priests.
