History of Jerusalem
Baldric of DolAfter 1107
A history of the First Crusade by the abbot of Bourgueil, later archbishop of Dol, reworking the Gesta Francorum. It contains one of the four versions cited here of Urban II’s sermon at Clermont.
Baldric was abbot of Bourgueil and, after 1107, archbishop of Dol in Brittany. He did not go on the crusade. Krey’s introduction says that his history was written after 1107 and adds little to the Gesta Francorum on which it is based.
In his version of the sermon the pope rebukes the knights for preying on fellow Christians and tells them either to lay down their arms or to go to the defence of the Eastern church. Baldric writes as one who saw the bishop of Le Puy come forward at the council to take the cross.
