Bronze Coin of Bar Kokhba, Year One
Struck by the rebel administration of Shim’on bar KosibaAD 132–133
A bronze coin struck by the rebels in the first year of the Bar Kokhba revolt. It names “Shimon, Prince of Israel” and is dated “Year 1 of the Redemption of Israel”, in the rebels’ own words.
The coin weighs 8.31 grams. One side shows a palm branch in a wreath with the Hebrew legend “Shimon Prince of Israel”; the other shows a lyre with the legend “Year 1 of the Redemption of Israel”. The museum dates it to AD 132–133.
The rebel government struck its own money, and this is one of many surviving pieces. The coins are evidence, from the rebels themselves, of the title their leader used and of the era by which they counted the years of the war. See the Bar Kokhba Revolt and Aelia Capitolina.
