The text has three parts: an appeal to the Evangelical congregations and Christians in Germany, a preamble that states the legal basis of the German Evangelical Church and the danger the synod saw, and six theses. Each thesis begins with a passage of Scripture, states a truth and rejects a “false doctrine”. The synod spoke for Lutheran, Reformed and United churches together and said that it did not mean to found a new church.

The page also links to the introductions that the Evangelical Church in Germany, the successor body, publishes with the text. They are that church’s later account of the synod and of the standing of the declaration among its member churches, and are cited in the Barmen Declaration only as such.
