Bernold was a cleric of Constance and later a monk at St Blasien and Schaffhausen. For the last decades of the eleventh century his chronicle is a running record made close to the events, and it stops in 1100.

He was a committed partisan of Gregory VII and Urban II: Henry IV (emperor) is to him a deposed king and the pope set up by Henry a heresiarch. His dates and his reports of synods are valuable; his judgments are those of one party.
