The Book of Concord was published in 1580, fifty years after the Augsburg Confession was presented. Its preface, signed by electors, princes and cities, tells how the confession of 1530 came to be the common statement of their churches and how later disputes among Lutherans led to the Formula of Concord. The signers say that they hold to the confession as it was presented to Charles V in 1530 and to no other version.

It is the primary source for what the Lutheran churches bound themselves to teach. The documents inside it are of different dates and are cited in this wiki under their own names where a separate record exists.
