The Enquiry has an introduction and five sections: whether Christ’s commission is still binding; a review of earlier missions; a survey of the world in tables of countries, populations and religions; the practicability of doing more; and the duty of Christians and the means to be used. Carey writes for his own denomination, the Particular Baptists, but says that he wishes every denomination to take up the work separately.

It is a proposal, written before Carey had left England. It is cited in William Carey and the Modern Missionary Movement for his argument and his plan.
