Hesychasm (The Catholic Encyclopedia, 1910)
The article on hesychasm in the Catholic Encyclopedia of 1910. It is cited only as evidence of how Roman Catholic theology judged Palamas’s teaching at that date, not as an authority on the events.
The Catholic Encyclopedia was published in New York with church approval; this volume carries a nihil obstat and imprimatur dated 1910. Its article on hesychasm, by Adrian Fortescue, calls the distinction between God’s essence and his energy “fundamentally opposed” to the Western scholastic idea of God and speaks of Palamas’s teaching as heresy.
An encyclopedia is not a source for what happened in the fourteenth century, and this wiki does not use it as one. The article is a primary document for one thing only: the attitude of Catholic theology to Palamas in the early twentieth century, which is how Gregory Palamas and the Hesychast Councils cites it.
