The Order of Service for the Inauguration of Church Union in South India
The printed order of the service that brought the Church of South India into being in 1947. It names those who took part, gives the words of the declaration of union and lists the nine bishops consecrated that day.
The booklet is the service as it was to be performed, with the names of the officiants written into the rubrics. It records which bodies united, in the words of the presiding bishop’s declaration: four dioceses of the Anglican Church of India, Burma and Ceylon, seven church councils of the South India United Church, and the Methodist Church in South India. It then gives the rite by which the bishops already consecrated were commissioned for the united church and nine new bishops were consecrated.
It is an order of service, printed for the occasion, and says what was to be done; it does not carry the date or the place, which are given by other records of the day. See the Church of South India Unites Four Traditions.
