The Oxford Movement: Twelve Years, 1833–1845
An account of the Oxford Movement from Keble’s sermon to Newman’s departure, by Richard Church, who lived in Oxford through those years and knew its leaders. It quotes the documents of the controversy over Tract 90.
R. W. Church, dean of St Paul’s and formerly a fellow of Oriel College, was revising these chapters in the last months of his life, and they were published in 1891, after his death. In a letter printed at the front of the book he says that he does not pretend to write a history of the movement, but wishes to preserve a memorial of what had passed before his own eyes.
The book takes the movement’s side throughout. It is cited here for dates and for the text of documents it reproduces, such as the resolution of the heads of houses against Tract 90.
