Vineam Domini Sabaoth
The constitution of 16 July 1705 in which Pope Clement XI ruled that a respectful silence did not satisfy the obedience owed to the earlier constitutions against Jansen’s book: its condemned sense had to be rejected in the heart as well as with the lips.
The clause printed in the handbook says that the church’s children must hear her “not only by keeping silent” but by inward assent; that the obedience owed to the earlier constitutions is in no way satisfied by “that respectful silence”; that the sense of Jansen’s book condemned in the five propositions is to be rejected and condemned as heretical by all the faithful, not with the mouth only but with the heart; and that the formula of submission may not lawfully be signed in any other mind.
It closes the distinction on which the defenders of Jansen had stood since the 1650s, between condemning the propositions and affirming that Jansen had taught them. See Jansenism and the Bull Unigenitus.
