Reports on the Conclusion of the Compacts at Jihlava
Two documents of 5 July 1436 on the agreement between the Council of Basel and the Bohemians and Moravians. They record the handing over of the Compacts at Jihlava, the promise of obedience and the concession of communion in both kinds.
The first document is a short summary, from a manuscript of the Prague chapter, of what was done between the council’s legates and the Bohemian and Moravian lords on the day after the feast of Saint Procopius. The second is the letter that the four legates wrote to the council at Basel that same day from Jihlava, describing the ceremony in the town square before the emperor Sigismund.
Neither is the text of the Compacts. Together they state the points settled in public that day: obedience promised by four priests in the name of all; peace between the Bohemians and all Christian peoples; no one to defame those who communicate in both kinds, who are to be held good and orthodox Catholics; and the archbishop of Prague and the bishops of Olomouc and Litomyšl to provide communion in both kinds for those accustomed to it and to ordain clergy who will give it. A memorandum printed with them (no. 967) lists what the Utraquists held that they had gained by the Compacts, beginning with the claim that communion in both kinds was granted as lawful and not merely tolerated. See the Hussites and the Compacts of Basel.
