The continuation is a contemporary record for the years around Otto’s imperial coronation, written by someone with access to the court. It reports under 959 the embassy of “Helena, queen of the Rus’” asking for a bishop, under 960 the papal envoys who called Otto into Italy, and under 962 his reception and coronation at Rome. The author is usually identified with Adalbert, monk of St Maximin at Trier and later archbishop of Magdeburg, whose own mission to the Rus’ the annals describe; the edition cited here records that identification in its notes.
