Decrees of the Council of Pisa
Extracts from the council called by cardinals of both papal lines in 1409. It declared that the cardinals could summon a council in a schism and cited both claimants to hear judgment; the cardinals swore to pursue reform.
The cardinals of the two rival lines, acting as one college, called a council to Pisa in 1409. The first extract is its declaration that the united college of cardinals had the right to summon it and that both claimants had been cited to appear. The second is the oath of the cardinals that whichever of them was elected pope would keep the council in being until the church was reformed “in its head and in its members”.
The source book does not print the sentence of deposition or the record of the election that followed. For those this wiki relies on the bull by which the Pisan pope John XXIII later summoned the Council of Constance. See the Great Western Schism.
