The sermon takes the text “Their foot shall slide in due time”. Its doctrine is that there is nothing that keeps wicked men at any one moment out of hell but the mere pleasure of God; the application addresses the hearers directly, with images of a bent bow, great waters dammed for the present, and a spider held over the fire. It ends by calling on them to take the opportunity that Christ has opened. It shows the preaching of the awakening in the words of one of its leaders. See the Great Awakening.
