The book is a folio printed by Johann Froben at Basel. Its title page names Erasmus as the reviser and says the text was corrected against the Greek and against manuscripts in both languages; the last leaf gives the printer and the date, February 1516. The Greek and Erasmus’s Latin stand side by side in two columns, and his notes follow in a separate part. Before the text come a dedication to Pope Leo X, dated 1 February 1516, and three prefaces, the first of them the Paraclesis.
The volume is cited here for what it prints and for what Erasmus says in it about his own work. He was already planning a revised edition within months of its appearance, as he told a friend in June 1516, so a reading found in this printing should not be assumed for the later ones.
