Fifth Lateran Council, Session 11: On the Abrogation of the Pragmatic Sanction
Leo X, with the approval of the Fifth Lateran Council19 December 1516
The bull by which Leo X, in the eleventh session of the Fifth Lateran Council, annulled the Pragmatic Sanction of Bourges and renewed the constitution Unam sanctam of Boniface VIII.
The eleventh session met on 19 December 1516. Its bull abolishes the Pragmatic Sanction of Bourges, a French ordinance limiting papal rights. In doing so it states that subjection to the Roman pontiff is necessary for salvation for all Christ’s faithful, cites Unam sanctam for this, and renews and approves that constitution, adding that this is without prejudice to the declaration of Clement V beginning Meruit.
Its wording speaks of “all Christ’s faithful”, where Boniface wrote “every human creature”.
