The constitution was approved on 24 April 1870, the earlier of the council’s two dogmatic constitutions. Its second chapter teaches that God can be known with certainty by reason from created things and has also revealed himself in a supernatural way, and that this revelation is contained in Scripture and in unwritten traditions as the Council of Trent declared. The third chapter treats faith, and the fourth teaches that faith and reason, having one source, cannot truly disagree.

The page that carries it at the Christian Classics Ethereal Library also carries the council’s second constitution, Pastor aeternus, and is headed in the site’s table of contents with the title of the following document in the book. The text itself is headed “The Dogmatic Decrees of the Vatican Council”.
