Acts of the First Zurich Disputation
A record of the debate held before the council of Zurich on 29 January 1523, written from memory by a Zurich schoolmaster and edited by Zwingli before it was printed. It includes the council’s summons and its decision.
Erhard Hegenwald, a schoolmaster in Zurich, wrote the record from memory soon after the meeting, and Huldrych Zwingli edited it for the press, as the editor of the translation explains. The record gives the council’s letter of invitation, the speeches of Zwingli and of Johann Faber, vicar general of the bishop of Constance, and the decree read out that afternoon.
It comes from Zwingli’s side. Faber published his own account, and a satire answered him; the editor of the translation has put passages from both into the notes. The council’s summons and decree are official texts quoted in full and can be relied on as such. The speeches are a hearer’s reconstruction.
