Shall the Fundamentalists Win?
Harry Emerson Fosdick21 May 1922
A sermon preached at the First Presbyterian Church, New York, on 21 May 1922, in which Fosdick argued that liberals and conservatives should remain together in the evangelical churches.
The title page gives the place and date of the sermon and says that it was taken down by a stenographer. In it Harry Emerson Fosdick describes the people “who call themselves the Fundamentalists”, lists the doctrines he says they were making tests of fellowship, sets a liberal reading beside the conservative one on three of them, and asks for tolerance.
It is a statement by one party to the dispute and describes the other side in its own terms. It is cited in the Fundamentals and the Modernist Controversy for what Fosdick said.
