Address to His Holiness Tawadros II on the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Meeting of Paul VI and Shenouda III
The address in which Pope Francis welcomed the Coptic Orthodox pope to Rome fifty years after the common declaration of 1973, and announced that the twenty-one men killed in Libya in 2015 would be included in the Roman Martyrology.
The address recalls the meeting of Paul VI and Shenouda III in Rome from 9 to 13 May 1973 and their christological declaration of 10 May, and the first visit of Tawadros II to Francis on 10 May 2013. Near its end the pope thanks Tawadros for the gift of a relic of “the Coptic martyrs killed in Libya on 15 February 2015” and announces, with his consent, that the twenty-one will be included in the Roman Martyrology as a sign of the spiritual communion uniting the two churches.
It is the announcement itself, in the pope’s words. See the Twenty-One Martyrs of Libya and Ancient Christological Divisions Are Addressed.
