Homily at the Common Ecumenical Prayer in the Lutheran Cathedral of Lund
The sermon Pope Francis preached in Lund Cathedral at the joint Catholic–Lutheran commemoration of the Reformation, on the words “Abide in me as I abide in you”.
Francis preached on John 15 during the common prayer of 31 October 2016; the Lutheran World Federation’s report says that he spoke in Spanish. He speaks of fifty years of dialogue between the federation and the Catholic Church, says that both sides must look at the past with love and honesty, and acknowledges “with gratitude” that the Reformation helped give Scripture a more central place in the church’s life. Of Martin Luther he says that the question of a just relationship with God, which haunted Luther, is the decisive question of human life.
It is the pope’s own statement of how he read the Reformation on that occasion. See Catholics and Lutherans Mark 500 Years of the Reformation Together.
