Registers of the Council and of the Company of Pastors of Geneva
The minute books of Geneva’s governing councils and of its ministers. Their dated entries record the banishment of Calvin and Farel in 1538, Calvin’s return in 1541, the adoption of the church ordinances and the sentence on Servetus in 1553.
Geneva was governed by a Little Council, a Council of Two Hundred and a General Council of the citizens, and the secretary of the Little Council kept a register of what was decided. The ministers of the city, the Company of Pastors, kept a register of their own.
These are official records written on the day, and they fix dates that the narratives leave vague. They are brief, and they give decisions more often than reasons. Kidd prints selected entries in their sixteenth-century French; they are paraphrased here.
