Guibert was abbot of Nogent in northern France from 1104. He did not go on the crusade. Krey’s introduction dates his book between 1108 and 1112 and calls it the best of the three literary reworkings of the Gesta Francorum.

In his version of the sermon the pope speaks of the holiness of Jerusalem, compares the crusaders to the Maccabees, and connects the recovery of the city with the coming of Antichrist and the end of the age.
