The book was published by the mission, and James Hudson Taylor himself refers readers to it for the details of the years after 1865. It quotes at length from the letters of the Lammermuir party, with the writer, place and date of each given in a footnote, and these letters are the reason it is cited here.

It is the mission’s own history, written to commend the work. The narrative that links the letters is hers, a generation after the events.
