Hermann wrote the entries for his own lifetime as events were reported at Reichenau, and the chronicle stops with the year in which he died. Under 1053 he tells of Leo IX’s defeat by the Normans and his detention at Benevento; under 1054, of the pope’s return to Rome in sickness as Easter approached and of his death there in April, which he puts on the sixteenth day before the Kalends of May.
