Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin (1474–1548): Biography
The short life of Juan Diego issued by the Holy See for his canonization in 2002. It states the account of his life and of the apparitions that the Catholic Church accepts.
The biography was published with the papers for the canonization. It gives Juan Diego’s native name, the years 1474 and 1548 for his birth and death, his baptism by a Franciscan and the dates 9 and 12 December 1531 for the apparitions, and it records his beatification on 6 May 1990. It names its sources in general terms: tradition, archaeological and iconographic sources, and the Nican Mopohua, which it dates to 1556 and ascribes to Antonio Valeriano.
It is a statement of what the Catholic Church holds, written almost five centuries after the events, and it is cited in that sense. It does not argue the points on which historians differ.
