The notes are short official records, written and kept current by the press office of the Holy See. They are reliable for dates of birth, ordination, appointment, retirement and death, which are matters of record for the body that publishes them. They are written by the institution the cardinals serve and do not discuss controversy: the note on Cardinal Bernard Law, for example, records that he became archbishop emeritus of Boston on 13 December 2002 and says nothing of why. Use them for dates and offices, and other documents for everything else.
