Brief and Succinct Account (Brevis et succincta commemoratio)
The Roman legates’ own report of what they did at Constantinople in June and July 1054, with the dates on which they laid down the bull, left the city, were recalled and left again.
The report is written in the third person but from the legates’ side throughout, and is usually taken to be the work of Humbert of Silva Candida. It gives the day and hour of the excommunication, the third hour on Saturday 16 July, and the legates’ movements afterwards. It calls Michael Cerularius a heresiarch, says that he falsified the bull in translation and stirred up a riot against the emperor, and ends with the emperor’s anger at the patriarch. The Greek account of the same days is in Edict (Semeioma) of the Synod of Constantinople, and the two should be read together.
