William Reed Huntington was rector of All Saints, Worcester, when he published the essay. He distinguishes the Anglican principle from the Anglican system, says that he does not wish to impose the whole English system on America, and argues that a church for the whole nation could stand on four points alone.

It states, sixteen years earlier and in other words, four points like those the American bishops adopted in 1886.
