John Paul II preached this homily in Seoul at what he calls the jubilee of the Church on Korean soil. In its third section he says that the Christian message reached Korea through books brought from China, that the Koreans sent one of their own to Beijing in 1784, where he was baptized, and that the community born from him was founded entirely by laypeople. It is cited in Korean Scholars Found a Church as the Catholic Church’s own statement, at its highest level, about that beginning.
