The apostolic letter of 15 August 1997 in which Pope John Paul II approved the Latin edition of the Catechism of the Catholic Church as its definitive text, five years after the first publication in French.
The letter says that the text published with Fidei Depositum in 1992 was in French, and that the Latin “typical edition” now promulgated is the definitive one. It was prepared by a commission of several Vatican departments which the pope appointed in 1993 under Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, and which examined the many changes suggested from around the world. Those that the pope approved were incorporated, and the letter says that the edition faithfully repeats the doctrinal content of the text of 1992. It is dated from Castel Gandolfo.
