Johnson spoke of the “brutal slaying” of King that night and asked every citizen to reject the violence that had struck him. The editorial note printed with the statement in the Public Papers records that King, president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, was assassinated on 4 April in Memphis, Tennessee.
