Letter from the Bishops, including the Reports Adopted by the Conference
The Lambeth Conference of 1878July 1878
The letter issued by the bishops of the Anglican Communion gathered at Lambeth Palace in July 1878, with the committee reports the conference adopted. One report speaks of the Old Catholics and of the Vatican Council of 1870.
The conference of 1878 published its conclusions as a letter that embodies the reports of its committees. The report on the Anglican Church’s relation to the Old Catholics and others who had left the Roman communion contains a short statement of the principles on which the Church of England reformed itself and a warning about the act of the Vatican Council.
It is cited as the common voice of the Anglican bishops eight years after the definition of papal infallibility.
