First Blessing Urbi et Orbi of Pope Leo XIV
Pope Leo XIV8 May 2025
The words Pope Leo XIV spoke from the central loggia of St Peter’s Basilica on the day of his election, beginning “Peace be with you all!”, before his first blessing.
The text is the Holy See’s transcript of what Leo XIV said to the crowd on Thursday 8 May 2025. He greets them with the risen Christ’s words of peace, thanks Pope Francis and the cardinals, calls himself an Augustinian, greets the church of Rome and, in Spanish, his former diocese of Chiclayo in Peru, and ends with a Hail Mary. See Leo XIV, the First Pope from the United States.
