Much Beloved Daughter: The Story of Florence Li
Li Tim Oi’s own account of her life, told to the writer Ted Harrison in Toronto in 1984 and printed with the letters and resolutions of 1943 to 1946. It was written forty years after her ordination.
Ted Harrison interviewed Florence Li Tim Oi in Toronto in the spring of 1984, partly in Cantonese and partly in English, and built the book around her words. Her recollections are given in quotation marks and his narrative links them. For the ordination itself the book is her memory at a distance of forty years.
The book also prints documents of the time: Bishop Ronald Hall’s letters to Archbishop William Temple of 4 June 1943 and 27 January 1944, in chapter 4, and the resolution of the Chinese House of Bishops of March 1946. Those are contemporary evidence, though they are quoted here in extracts chosen by the author. See the First Woman Is Ordained an Anglican Priest.
