Life and Writings of the Moldavian Elder Paisius Velichkovsky
A volume published in Russia in 1847 containing a Life of Paisius Velichkovsky by a monk of his community, his letters and treatises, and a preface by its Russian editors. His letter to Theodosius describes how the Greek Philokalia was gathered.
The volume has three layers of different weight. The letters are Paisius’s own. The one to Theodosius, archimandrite of the Sophroniev hermitage, describes his work of correcting and translating the ascetic fathers and reports what he had heard of Macarius of Corinth’s collection, then at the press in Venice; it is a contemporary’s account, at second hand, written before the Greek book appeared. The Life was written in his community after his death in 1794. The preface was written by the Russian editors in 1847, half a century later, and is the source for the statement that the Slavonic Dobrotolubiye printed at Moscow was Paisius’s translation; it gives the year of that printing as 1795, where the book’s own title leaf has 1793.
