Das Newe Testament Deutzsch (the September Testament, 1522)
The first printing of Luther’s German New Testament, issued at Wittenberg by Melchior Lotter in September 1522 with woodcuts by Lucas Cranach. The copy cited is in the Kessler Reformation Collection at Emory University.
The book is a folio of 222 leaves printed by Melchior Lotter at Wittenberg, with twenty-one woodcuts by Lucas Cranach in the Revelation. It is called the September Testament from the month of its appearance; a letter of Martin Luther written about 20 September 1522 sends finished copies to the court, lacking only the preface to Romans.
The record linked here is the holding library’s description of its own copy. It is cited for the book as an object: its title, printer, date and make-up. What Luther says about his translation and about the books of the New Testament is in his prefaces, which have their own record, Prefaces to the Books of the Bible.
